Detroit Statistics That Will Shock You!

Believe it or not, there are a few people out there who actually think Detroit is a great place to live. I’m not talking about the metro area, but the actual city of Detroit itself… crazy, right? They tell me what a great history the city has, and how it’s got lots of culture and life… that may be, I don’t argue that. Heck, every major city on the planet his it’s own culture and way of life, that’s how big cities work. But, I can tell you what most major cities in America DON’T have:

80,000 abandoned buildings
75 out of Detroit’s 135 square miles are abandoned, and area larger than the entire city of Vancouver
1 in 47 are homeless
Median home price is $6,000
Unemployment is officially 29%, but is estimated at near 50%
Unsolved murder rate 70%
Lowest high school graduation rate in he country, only 21%

Are these the kind of things that define a great city? Would you want to raise your family in this type of environment? Of course not. That’s why everyone who can afford to do so is leaving the city and not looking back. And don’t blame this on jobs, there were plenty of jobs available in the 60’s during the riots. People didn’t flee Detroit in record numbers because they didn’t have a job, they left because they no longer felt safe.

FYI, I am not going to bother listing the sources of this information… a simple google search on any of the above FACTS will provide all the proof you need. Feel free to post your crazy Detroit statistics as a comment and I will add them to this post, as there are undoubtedly tons more.

Its such a sad state. I don't like the cold weather and wanted to live in the south until my first kid was born and we moved back to Detroit to raise the kids near their grandparents. Eventually, after 3 years we packed up everything in March and left Michigan for good. We're in Florida now and while things aren't great, I have a good job, make a lot more money, my kids have better opportunities…etc. Its sad.

Race is the root cause of this. If you look at this Census report issued in 2003 you will see that around the turn of the millennium one-third of all Blacks in the US were on some form of public assistance. One-third!

I do want to ask two thing of the author of this blog:
    1. Have you read The Color of Crime?

    2. Have you read Civil War 2 by Thomas W. Chittum?

SHUT DOWN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN DETROIT

Yes, that is right. With a graduation rate of 20%, something has gone HAYWIRE. It is evident that most of Detroiters DO NOT WANT EDUCATION. So why force them? Why spend billions on a lost cause?

If Detroiters want an education, then give them one, but don't force them. It is disrespectful to black culture.

I didn't leave because I felt unsafe. In fact, I felt safer in Detroit than any other place. I left Detroit because I could find work. And I do look back a lot. I miss the D and the great people whom I've grown close to in the 30 years I lived there. Also, New York City has a lot but it's music scene pales in comparison to Detroit.

Actually there is nothing wrong with the City of Detroit. It is like all cities-dirt covered over with concrete, asphalt and buildings. It is the people that suck. While there may be some good people in Detroit-there aren't enough of them. Most of the ones left are unemployable, even if someone was crazy enough to start a new business there. They are so dumb and drug-addled that if you let them go to lunch, you'd have to retrain them when they got back! A large nuclear blast would cure Detroit's ills. One big mushroom cloud and it's Miller Time! Then start to rebuild.

The situation with Detroit is not because of race. It is because of values. What values these people have, the opportunities that are available to them, and how they use those opportunities is what will get them out of poverty. I just read an article from Time magazine from 1987 which talks about 20 years of failed social programs and the fact that unwed mothers are rampant in the black communities and fathers don't or do not have the capabilities to take care of their family. It is values, not race. It was as if they were talking about today. This is what needs to change. When I look at some of the old buildings in Detroit, I see possiblity and with a little hard work and ingenuity, it could be beautiful. Other people see a crap hole. But my thought process needs to be in everyone's head. The effort needs to be made by everyone. We each need to carry our own load. It is learning to do this that will elevate and empower people to be all that they can be. What you are seeing is the repercussions of giving a man a fish and not giving him what he needs to do the fishing himself. Keep giving and people will keep taking. Once the giving stops, they don't know what to do.

The problem in D simply comes from the racism there decades ago that was never corrected. Blacks were discriminated against for years, and then when they decided to stand up for themselves, many of the rich white families left, and with them left many job opportunities. The racism and huge jobless was never set back into place, the city was left to work out it's own problems. For the most part, those problems were solved by poor people making money the only ways available to them, in some cases selling drugs or carrying out hits on people. But the people were forced to live this way, there was no other option for many because the city was oppressed and then abandoned, without any type of government help like most southern cities which were faced with racism. So to everyone hating on my city of Detroit, stfu, it's because of the people like you Detroit is the way it is now, and we're just trying to get back what should have been ours.

Just from looking at the blog I'd say you have some love for Detroit city and it's hurting you to see the condition that it's in. Detroit is in the condition it is in because the private and public sectors showed no love to the people they left it to. Blame yourself, even in your pain, you can't bring yourself to help.

If there was a reason for all this it would be carelessness, when i was younger me and my mom had to live in detroit when my dad died when i was too, and i grew up there until i was 20 when my girlfriend made me leave. People did what they wanted wherever you went, depending on the police was a joke. People would get shot and it would be anywhere from an hour to days before it was cleaned up, i got jumped every day and no matter who i told nothing was done about it, in 3 months of high school i had to leave both osbourne and pershing high school because everyday i was fighting for my lunch money. It's rediculous when the african americans in the city try blaming others for their problems their because any white guy i knew there minded there own business, and still had blacks putting guns to their heads, if white and black business started launching in the suburbs, and not putting up with the drug dealers and robbers bullshit im sure things would look alot better
